GLASGLOBAL® - Software for Standard-Compliant Glass Design


This specialized software reliably supports engineers, structural engineers, designers, and contractors in the computational design of glass components in accordance with national and international standards (such as DIN 18008, SIA 2057, or ÖNORM). Thanks to the integrated, automated load calculation for wind and snow, as well as the manufacturer-independent glass database, stresses and deflections can be efficiently determined. The result is structured, independently validated, and verifiable structural analysis reports that serve as a sound basis for approvals.

GLASGLOBAL® supports key areas of glass structural analysis—from traditional glazing to specialized design verifications for point-supported, fall-protection, walkable, and accessible glass structures.

Relevant load assumptions—such as wind, snow, dead weight, live loads, and climatic influences—are taken into account and compared with the permissible stress and deflection values. This allows for the structured, standards-compliant, and verifiable design of various glass structures.

Basic Module

The regulations governing glass sizing in Germany have undergone continuous development and change in recent years. The previously applicable regulations—TRLV, TRAV, and TRPV—have been replaced by DIN 18008, “Glass in Building Construction—Design and Construction Rules.” Linear glazing systems, which were still defined in the TRLV as of December 2010, are now covered in DIN 18008 Part 2. For example, calculations no longer use a global safety factor but rather partial safety factors. These account for uncertainties in the system, the loads, and the materials.

Point-Supported Glazing

The Technical Rules for the Design and Construction of Point-Fixed Glazing (TRPV) for vertical and overhead glazing, which were in effect until the end of 2010, have been superseded by DIN 18008 Part 3. The standard distinguishes between two types of fasteners. On the one hand, there are plate brackets, which are attached to the glazing by drilling a hole; on the other hand, there are clamp fasteners, which are attached to the edge of the glass without drilling. You can quickly enter and calculate both types using the Point Bracket module in GLASGLOBAL®.

Fall-resistant glazing

If glass elements prevent people from falling from a significant height, they are considered fall-protection glazing, which is regulated by DIN 18008, Part 4. Explanation of the individual categories:

Category A: Glazing that must resist horizontal live loads because it lacks a load-bearing parapet rail or a front-mounted mullion at the required height to support horizontal live loads in accordance with DIN EN 1991-1-1-1:2010-12, 6.4 and DIN EN 1991-1-1/NA:2010-12, 6.4, to support horizontal live loads.

Category B: Bottom-fixed glass balustrades whose individual panes are connected by a continuous handrail at the required height.

Category C1: Balustrade infills that do not need to support horizontal live loads at the required height.

Category C2: Glazing located below a load-bearing crossbar positioned at the required height, which does not need to support horizontal live loads at the required height.

Category C3: Glazing with a load-bearing mullion positioned at the required height, which does not need to support horizontal live loads at the required height.

In the program, you can calculate such glazing in accordance with the applicable standard without needing to enter any additional data. The program will also alert you to standard requirements that must be taken into account in your project.

Walk-on glazing

The additional requirements for walk-on glazing are specified in Part 5 of DIN 18008. Walk-on glazing must consist of laminated safety glass (VSG) with at least three panes. With GLASGLOBAL® Begehbar, both symmetrical and asymmetrical laminated safety glass units can be certified as walk-on glazing.

Walk-on Glazing

In accordance with DIN 18008-6, the “Walk-on” add-on has been implemented in GLASGLOBAL®. DIN 18008-6 distinguishes between the following types of glazing:

Accessible glazing
Glazing that can be walked on for maintenance purposes (e.g., cleaning).

Fall-through-resistant glazing
Non-accessible glazing located near areas that can be accessed for maintenance work.

Product-Dependent Shear Modulus

The “Product-Dependent Shear Modulus” add-on is available in the GLASGLOBAL® expert software for the structural analysis of glazing systems in accordance with DIN 18008. In GLASGLOBAL®, the shear modulus for laminated glass (e.g., Trosifol®, SentryGlas®) can be taken into account depending on the load type.

Wind and Snow Load

When you enter the ZIP code, the wind and snow load zones are automatically determined in accordance with EN 1991-1-3 and EN 1991-1-4, and all required values are entered.

GLASGLOBAL® is software for the structural analysis of single-pane and insulated glass units. Based on DIN 18008 and the concept of partial safety factors, the software determines the risk of breakage and the deflection of glazing under loads from wind, snow, climate fluctuations, differences in elevation, and traffic loads. Optionally, the membrane stress effect can be taken into account for panes supported on all sides.
